American Theatre Wing

In September 1988, David Boles -- a new graduate student at Columbia University in the City of New York -- attended a live City University of New York Graduate Center television workshop hosted by the American Theatre Wing (the TONY awards people). The topic of the program was "Playwright, Director & Choreographer" as part of the ongoing "Working in the Theatre" series of conversations. David asked a question about new Playwrights working with directors who wanted to change the script, and director Austin Pendleton offered David the best advice of his life that has colored and coordinated his every colaboration since: "Run!" You may see a video clip of David and Austin embedded below, as well as the entire American Theatre Workshop #137 right below that for your total viewing pleasure. Two decades later, David would be teaching at CUNY in the very same building.
